Yes, you can buy crypto ETFs on Vanguard as of October 2026, but only funds run by other companies. Vanguard's crypto policy changed on December 2, 2025, when it opened its brokerage platform to third-party funds that mainly hold cryptocurrencies. Vanguard still does not make its own crypto funds or let clients buy coins directly.
Can you buy a bitcoin ETF on Vanguard?
Yes. A Vanguard brokerage account can trade spot bitcoin ETFs issued by other firms, along with funds tied to ether, solana and XRP, The Block and Decrypt reported. Vanguard says clients can trade most third-party crypto ETFs and mutual funds that meet regulatory standards.
Vanguard compares this to gold. It lets clients buy gold funds from other managers even though it has never launched a gold ETF of its own. According to ETF.com, funds tied to meme coins remain restricted.
Does Vanguard offer bitcoin directly?
No. Vanguard's own explainer covers funds only and notes that people who want to hold coins directly can use an exchange. That makes Vanguard different from Fidelity and Schwab, which run separate crypto accounts for buying coins. The guide on crypto at Schwab or Fidelity explains those accounts.
Vanguard also says it has no plans to launch its own crypto ETFs or mutual funds. It prefers investments that produce cash flow, such as interest and dividends. In July 2026 Vanguard posted a job for a head of digital assets to work on tokenization and stablecoin research, The Motley Fool reported, but that is a job listing, not a product.
What was Vanguard's crypto policy before?
When the SEC approved spot bitcoin ETFs in January 2024, Vanguard refused to let clients buy them and also cut access to bitcoin futures ETFs. It said crypto did not fit its long-term investing approach.
That stance softened after Salim Ramji, the former head of BlackRock's iShares business, became CEO in July 2024. Andrew Kadjeski, Vanguard's head of brokerage and investments, said crypto funds had kept working as designed and stayed liquid through volatile periods, and that the back-office processes for them had matured. Bloomberg reported that client demand also drove the change.
Can you buy leveraged or inverse crypto ETFs on Vanguard?
Vanguard's crypto change did not undo an older Vanguard rule that stopped new purchases of leveraged and inverse mutual funds, ETFs and ETNs. Vanguard called those products very speculative and complex. Clients who already held them could keep, sell or transfer them. Products that bet on falling prices are explained in how shorting crypto works.
Whether a specific fund can be bought is shown on Vanguard's trade screen, and the list can change. For how fund flows are tracked, see what crypto ETF inflows and outflows mean.
Rules differ by country and change often. Check the regulator or a qualified professional for your own situation.
