Can you pay bills with crypto?
You can pay some bills with crypto, usually through a crypto card or a payment service that converts it to dollars, but spending crypto can be a taxable event.
Yes, you can pay some bills with crypto, but in most cases the company you are paying never receives crypto. A card or payment service sells your coins and sends dollars instead. That conversion is convenient, but it can carry fees and tax consequences, so it helps to know how each route works.
How do you pay bills with cryptocurrency?
The most common route is a crypto debit card. The card is linked to your crypto balance and converts it to regular currency when you pay, so it works anywhere the card network is accepted, including many utility, phone and subscription bills. Our guide on how crypto cards work explains the mechanics. For shops and sites that take coins directly, see where you can spend crypto.
A second route is a bill-pay service that takes crypto and pays the biller for you. BitPay's Bill Pay, for example, has offered payments toward mortgages, rent, credit cards, car loans and personal loans from a crypto wallet. Its page says the service was paused from December 26, 2025, with no confirmed date for resuming as of October 2026. Services like this can change quickly, so check that one is active before relying on it.
Can I use bitcoin to pay rent?
Only if your landlord accepts it directly, or if you use a card or bill-pay service that pays the rent in dollars on your behalf. Most landlords and property managers expect bank transfers, checks or card payments. Paying a mortgage is a separate question, covered in our guide on whether you can get a mortgage with crypto.
Can you use bitcoin to pay taxes?
Not federal taxes directly. The IRS payments page lists bank account, debit or credit card, digital wallet, same-day wire, check or money order, and cash. Crypto is not on the list, although a crypto card may work where card payments are accepted, with card processing fees.
Some states have experimented. Colorado began accepting crypto for state taxes on September 1, 2022, through PayPal, which converts the coins to dollars before the state receives them. Reported fees were $1 plus 1.83% of the payment, and refunds are not paid in crypto. Westword later reported that only six of 1.37 million payments in the first months used crypto. Check the Colorado Department of Revenue for whether the option is still offered.
Do you pay tax when you pay bills with crypto?
In the US, often yes. The IRS says that paying for goods or services with crypto you hold as a capital asset is an exchange, which produces a capital gain or loss. The gain or loss is the difference between the value of what you received and your cost basis in the coins. This applies even when a card does the conversion in the background. For more, see whether you pay tax on crypto if you don't sell.
Rules differ by country and change often. Check the tax authority or a qualified professional for your own situation.
